Stage Grandas de Salime – A Fonsagrada: Camino Primitivo guide and entry into Galicia

This is the stage where the Camino Primitivo enters Galicia: you leave Grandas de Salime, climb to the Alto del Acebo, cross the Asturias–Galicia border among wind turbines and descend to A Fonsagrada, already in the province of Lugo.

Distance

About 25.8 km

Difficulty

Medium-high

Estimated time

About 7 h (more in bad weather)

Altitude

Alto del Acebo: about 1,100 m

Key tip for the stage: On crossing into Galicia the direction of the Camino’s scallop shell changes: follow the yellow arrows, not the shell. In fog, rain or snow on the pass visibility drops a lot.
Water and services: Few places with full services: carry water and supplies. There is a hostel in Grandas de Salime and full services in A Fonsagrada.

What to see

Food and drink

Typical in the area are meats, trout, octopus, Oscos cheese and bean stews. There is no specific food information for this stage.

Practical tips

  • Carry plenty of water and food: there are few services along the way.
  • In Galicia follow the yellow arrows, not the direction of the scallop shell.
  • Take extra care at road crossings and on stretches with no verge.
  • Wear waterproof boots: there is mud on the forest stretches.
  • In fog or bad weather on the pass, carry a torch in case you arrive at dusk.
